History
Science Space under the name of Science Centre and Planetarium first opened in 1989 and was located in the old migrant building, just north of the current location. The Centre was first started by Glen Moore and a team of enthusiastic volunteers. With exhibits from Expo 88 and Questacon, the Centre became a popular local attraction and started attracting many people to the region.
In 1998 Wollongong suffered severe floods causing devastating effects throughout the area. These floods significantly damaged the gallery, exhibits and equipment.
In 2000, together with support from the University of Wollongong (UOW) and the NSW Government, Science Space was rebuilt and opened its doors to the public. Science Space was the first building to be built on the Innovation Campus, which now has 9 buildings on the coastal site, making up the University of Wollongong’s award-winning research and commercial precinct.
