TRICK OR TREAT // Halloween in the Illawarra

Our guide to all the fun happening this spooky season in the Illawarra

Who’s ready to get spooky this Halloween?

With more and more local businesses getting into the spooky season [whoooooo] of Halloween we’ve rounded up a list of fun and frightening events that are happening on or around the 31st for big and little ghosties alike.

And a word for all our trick-or-treaters out there. There are plenty of homes and streets around the Illawarra willing and ready for that knock at the door. We reckon a general rule of thumb is that if the house is decked out with decorations, they’re likely to open for trick-or-treaters. But let’s not forget, Halloween isn’t everyone’s cup of witches’ brew!

Another good idea is to put an orange balloon in the letterboxes of your neighbours asking them to blow it up and pop it on their letterbox if they’re happy to open the doors to kids on a sugar rush!

In the meantime, check out our list of fang-tastic Halloween events happening in the Illawarra.

Port Kembla Fear Fest 2023

Watch the whole of Port Kembla turn into Halloween-town on the 28th of October. Businesses along Wentworth Street will be handing out treats, putting up decorations and giving out prizes for all us goblins and gremlins.

There’ll be heaps of fun activities like a haunted house, street entertainment, food for sale, and markets.

Let’s get out and support all the local businesses putting on this event for us, aren’t we the luckiest little ghosts in the graveyard?!

Spookfest 2023

Head to UOW science space on the 27th of October for some spine-tingling fun. Their After Dark family event will have live science and planetarium shows, a gory green screen, face-painting and loads of other fun activities.

If you’re feeling peckish, visit the gruesome kitchen for some deliciously terrifying treats. There will be prizes for best dressed and as this is one that regularly sells out so we recommend grabbing your tickets before they vanish in the night.

Create & Sip – Candle Making

Halloween and candles go hand in hand AND you can actually make your very own Halloween-themed candle at Georgia Rose with your very own hands on the night of the 27th.

There’ll be hot and cold grazing food, a Halloween-themed bellini on arrival and you’ll come home with a custom skull candle. A few spooky and fun games will be played through the evening as well with prizes to be won, yay!

Smith’s Halloween Horroz Maze Spooktacular 2023

This spooky maze is back and scarier than ever. Still free and with no bookings required this is some seriously freaky fun.

Bring the little ghouls to the session on the 28th for some kid-friendly-ish scares from 2- 4:30 p.m.

For those looking for a spookier scare [big kids and adults] then come around after 6 pm for a frightful delight. The big kids’ version will also be running from 4 pm on Halloween itself if you wanna get your scare on then too.

Kids’ Disco’s

On Halloween night from 6 pm to 8 pm Kiama Golf Club will be holding a spooky Halloween disco for our little monsters. Lolly bags, poppers, bubbles and even a balloon drop, for only $6 per child we reckon that’s a good deal.

The Fraternity Club will also be holding a disco on the 31st with chippies and a flashing toy included in their ticket. More info here.

The Eve of Halloween

All aboard the Ghost Train and the Mini Monster Express for a scarily good time at Illawarra Light Railway Museum. Get your costumes on, take some rides on the trains, boogie at the kid’s disco and enjoy the fab atmosphere of the museum area. Book through their website to secure your spot.

Zombie Outbreak Escape Room

Wollongong Library is putting together an escape room experience for young people aged 12-24- but with a spooky twist. Work with your friends as scientists and the world’s last hope in stopping a zombie outbreak. See if you can outsmart those creepy zombies for time runs out. Tickets are free and the fun sounds priceless.

Beyond The Grave at La La La’s

Check out this line-up of bewitching acts, featuring Basil’s Kite, Left Lane, Creeping Jenny, and a bunch of fab drag acts, artists, and photographers, this bash promises to be howlingly good. Wear your costume and prepare to have fun… or else.

Movement Presents- Halloween Rave

One of the best things about celebrating Halloween in our part of the world is that it’s warm enough to actually get outside and have fun. That’s why this special open-air Halloween techno rave sounds like a super sick time for all you party werewolves. There’ll be local talent on the decks and plenty of space to dance that monster mash-up! Tix are selling fast so grab yours quick.

Scared Of Halloween Mini-Fest @ Seeker Brewing

Local punk rockers, Scared Of Sharks are hosting a pre-Halloween mini fest at Seeker Brewing on the 28th as part of their “Yuppie Land!” tour. Special guests for the night include Princess Unit and the one and only Brendan Neville, AKA Mr. Sleepy Joe!

GayDay Presents- Gayoween

Get together for a spooky, queer, silly and fun Halloween party. Local DJs will be providing the tunes, there’ll be drag performers for entertainment, loads of space to dance and feel safe and tons of costumey fun of course. Slay the night away ghoulies!

It’s the most wonderful time of the fear and we hope we’ve put you in the mood for a boo-tiful time.
