Nick Garbett – The Glider
The Glider captures travel, discovery, and reconnection between old friends.
Recorded and produced in Berlin over the course of two years, The Glider is the first release from the new project of long time friends and collaborators Nick Garbett and Mike Majkowski.
Coming off the back of Garbett’s 2018 Freedman Jazz Fellowship win, and subsequent relocation to Italy, the album captures a period of travel, discovery, and reconnection between old friends. The result is a meditation on colour, texture and rhythm, with musical landscapes and electronic flourishes reminiscent of Jon Hassell and Brian Eno’s Fourth World, all grounded in a distinctly Australian celebration of togetherness.
The plan was to write, record and produce an album together and get some other great Australian musicians living in Berlin on there too. What was expected to take six months turned into an epic two-year adventure with the music taking a direction neither Nick nor Mike had foreseen. The Glider is the first of two records slated for release in 2021.
With most of the project’s musicians still in Berlin, Nick Garbett has assembled an Australia-based lineup for the album’s release, with Matt Keegan (sax), Dave Rodriguez (guitar), Vincent Sebastian (percussion), Finn Ryan (drums) and Pat Harris (bass) all enlisted to bring The Glider to life on stage for the first time.
A note about the venue:
Please note that while we are operating in accordance with the NSW Public Health order, and at reduced capacities, The Music Lounge is a smaller, more intimate venue, and the audience is seated close together.
