We’re Summer Lovin’ at Penny Whistlers

Why you’ll be hitting up this gorge Kiama cafe all season long

We love Penny Whistlers Cafe in Kiama and we love it EVEN more [if that’s possible?!] in the summertime.

The whole cafe is just a total vibe with friendly staff, a fun atmosphere and STUNNING views over Kiama harbour, sea views all day baby!

The food is also tasty, tasty, tasty and the drinks selection will take you from morning pick me up to afternoon wind down with total ease.

Here are some more reasons we’ll be like Sandy and Danny this summer at Penny Whistlers. Tell me more, tell me more….

1:: Hello Happy Hour

Never mind hello, you had us at the other two words, Happy + Hour = Heaven! Every Friday and Saturday evening from 4 pm to 6 pm you can score some mighty fine specials at the cafe. $10 Pornstar Martinis, $8 house wines and $6 Young Henry’s Tinnies. With the economy the way it’s going at the mo’ we really can’t afford to miss this one, right?!

2:: Brekkie of champions

Isn’t it just the pits when you treat yourself to a little sleep-in only to find you’ve missed the brekkie at the cafe? Well, it’s all good at Penny Whistlers because breakfast is an all-day kind of dealio- score!

You can indulge in a little weekend or weekday sleep-in [we don’t judge] and still indulge in some malted buttermilk hotcakes after… or some corn and roast capsicum fritters … or a Penny’s benny… or anything else on the delicious sounding menu that tickles your fancy.

3:: Lunch bunch

It’s not just the brekkie game Penny Whistlers has covered; their lunch menu sounds pretty epic too! It’s actually also an all-day option so if you’re someone who prefers an early or late lunch then you’re sorted.

On the menu, you’ll find mouthwatering lunchtime classics like beer battered fish ‘n’ chips and wagyu beef cheeseburgers and also fun and unique options like tacos de cerdo, roasted broccoli & macadamia salads and tostada bowls. We think this menu, sounds fresh, fun and funky and can’t wait to get our lips around it all.

4:: Dinner is served

Yep, that’s right they’re even open for dinner too! From Thursdays to Saturdays Penny Whistlers serve up a top-notch teatime selection. The menu is wonderfully extensive with share platters for nibbling, yummy starters [twice cooked pork belly and seared Japanese scallops- yes please] and mains to make your tummy sing.

We’re keen on the sound of the braised beef cheeks on a colder night and are super-duper curious about the mocequa, a Brazilian seafood stew with mussels, calamari, scallops and market fish. We also think summer is an ideal time to get chomping on the prawn fettuccine followed by a pear, strawberry and Cointreau crumble for dessert, nom nom!

They’ve also got a fab kids’ menu with options like crispy chicken tenderloins, ham and cheese quesadillas, and of course soft serve with rainbow sprinkles.

5:: That killer view

You’ll find Penny Whistlers on Shoalhaven St in Kiama and we’re not exaggerating when we say the views here are GORGEOUS! The floor-to-ceiling open windows at the front of the cafe look right over Kiama Harbour so you can admire all the beautiful blue.

There’s also outdoor seating so on sunny days like the ones we’ve got coming we’re sure this is the place to be for sipping, sitting and just taking it all in.

The Kiama coastline is one of the more dramatic ones in the Illawarra so we love watching as the ocean switches moods with the weather and hey, admit it, who doesn’t pretend to be an old-timey sea captain gazing wistfully over the shore? Or is that just us?

6:: Local love

Penny Whistlers is all about being fresh and local with their produce and we’re here for it. They source many of their ingredients locally and aim to use the highest quality produce. The kitchen team also makes all their sauces from scratch, yep even their thick shake syrups, so good!

7:: Community vibes

Another special thing about Penny Whistlers is just how awesome of a spot they are in the Kiama community. Because they’re open 7 days a week they’re always there for a good quality cuppa joe, a friendly smile and tasty bite to eat.

They often run yummy food or drink specials and keep their socials up to date with all the goods. They also hold fun events occasionally including live music and are even throwing an NYE bash to ring in 2024 [but it’s already booked out soz, they’re just that popular!]

They have a full takeaway menu so you can bring your goodies home with you or take them down for a picnic on the water and as a bonus, they’re family-run! Y’all know how much we love family-run businesses in the Illawarra.

The couple who run the biz, Pete and Cheree, not only love good food, drink and Kiama, but they also love good music, so when you visit, they’re always playing fun beats to make your visit complete. In fact they’re spinning those beats on vinyl alllllll day long! So cool!

Whelp, it’s confirmed Penny Whistlers is gonna be on our rotation of wonderful spots to hang this Summer, and likely the rest of the year too!

We hope to see you down there, drink in your hand, tasty food on your plate and of course a big smile on your face!
