Check out this helpful list of coeliac friendly restaurants around town

If you have coeliac disease or if you are someone with a gluten intolerance it can be hard to find places to get a tasty and gluten-free meal.

We’ve reached out to restaurants and eateries all around the Illawarra to put together a list of coeliac-friendly eats.

Just an important note: while chatting with these awesome restaurant owners, they mentioned they try their best to keep things separate in the kitchen, their kitchens may still have foods containing gluten, and some cross-contamination could occur.

The Bistro on Beaton

The entire menu here is gluten-free and there are also plenty of dairy-free options as well. The menu is regularly changing and they run mid-week specials like schnitty or fish ‘n’ chips night. Oooh and kids eat free every Tuesday, score!

Matthew Marcs

This coffee shop in Barrack Heights serves all gluten-free goodies and a pretty decent cup of joe to boot. The menu has all your classic cafe faves like bacon and egg rolls as well as smashed avo. You can also grab fun burgers and sangas plus yummy sweet treats.

GF Eats

With a name like that you know they’re gonna have the coeliac-friendly goods. Check out their menu for delicious eats that are 100% gluten-free and coeliac-safe, proving that gluten-free dining can be anything but bland. The menu here is epic plus they sell loads of yummy pastries, ready meals, finger foods AND they do catering.

Woonona Pizza Kitchen

Gluten-free pizzas are available here as well as gluten-free penne, gnocchi and spaghetti. They’ve got all the classic pizza options like Hawaiian and Margarita as well as some other cool flavours like Pesto Chicken and a Woonona Pizza that’s chocked with tasty toppings.

Sketch Coffee and Art

A cafe that’s also an art gallery and gift store… love it! Most of the menu can be made gluten-free so have a chat with the super friendly staff before you order and they’ll help you the best they can.

Fish Vibes

We love a good fish and chippy and one that offers gluten-free battered fish and chips we double love. They have fryers dedicated to their gluten-free dishes and you can have a chat with the staff about your exact needs before you order so they can help you make the most of your meal.

OMG Decadent Donuts

You can find these donut stalls at markets and events around the Illawarra. They are a Coeliac Australia Accredited Business which means they’ve been tested, audited and confirmed to have the goods. You can often find them at Crown St Markets, Kiama Seaside Markets, The Wentworth Markets and Bulli Village Market. Keep an eye on their socials for other places they might pop up.

2 Bulls Eatery

If you’re craving a good, juicy burger then head to 2 Bulls Eatery in Warilla. They have gluten-free burger buns and all their loaded fries and chicken wings are gluten-free as well. You can also switch out your beef patty for a vegan beyond burger and their staff are super helpful when it comes to any other dietary restrictions.

Sans Gluten

This gluten-free bakery is based in Shellharbour but takes all their orders online through their socials. Think yummy cakes and cupcakes, bread and bread rolls. We know first-hand how delicious these goodies are and with just one peek at their Insta you’ll be drooling too.

Earth Walker and Co

A fair number of gluten-free options here including ones for the kiddos. There are often also some gluten-free sweet treats on display for the sweet tooths. They’re open 7am to 2pm daily but heads up the kitchen closes at 1.30pm.

Jin’s Place

This authentic Korean and Japanese restaurant has a good selection of gluten-free options including stir fry and noodle dishes. The owner and his staff are also super accommodating, so make sure to chat with them when you visit.

Balinese Spice Magic

90% of the meals here are gluten-free and all of the meals are dairy-free. If you’ve never tried Indonesian food before, we defo recommend giving this restaurant a go. Everything is exciting, full of flavour and the staff are super lovely. They’ve also got loads of vegan options. Just let the staff know you’re coeliac before ordering.

Manjits Indian

Sometimes all your tummy needs is a good hearty curry and Manjits in Corrimal has plenty of gluten-free options to satisfy your desire. We love a classic like Chicken Tikka Masala but if you’re looking to heat things up, the Vindaloo Hot Curry is the way to go.

Embers in the Village

Another wonderful gluten-free Indian option. This restaurant even has an app you can download for easy ordering and to keep on top of all the deals and specials they run. We’ll admit we’re pretty partial to a Butter Chicken and the one here is yummo-scrummo!

JJ’s Indian

With two locations around town and a menu full of gluten-free options, JJ’s is worth adding to the list. There are vegan, vego and meat options available here, as well as the onion bhajis on the entree menu… mmmm!

Bombora Seafood

Cracker views, cracker food and a good selection of gluten-free options for brekkie, lunch and dinner. The staff are also super friendly and accommodating and the mimosas are only 10 smackeroos… yew!

Gringa Tacos

The whole menu is gluten-free here and is full of taaaaaaasty Mexican bites. They have weekly specials like the featured taco that changes regularly and wing Wednesdays. We honestly cannot get enough of their birria taco and have to order it every time we visit.

Sneaky Burger

With the Wollongong location right under the WIN Entertainment Centre, this is a great spot for a pre/post-game or show feed. With the option to switch to a gluten-free bun and some of the crunchiest chips around town, we’re always keen for a visit. You can also find them in Albion Park Rail.

Dagwood

Here they have a variety of food options including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free. The menu is designed to be shared so is best enjoyed with your crew. Oh, and they’ve got some pretty killer happy hour deals. Did someone say $13 espresso martinis?

Ain’t Nonna’s

Most of the menu at this cosy Italian-style trattoria is or can be made gluten-free. The menu is seasonal and changes regularly and the gelato is also gluten-free so make sure to save room for some dessert.

Da Orlando

The authentic vibe and welcoming atmosphere here is top-notch. And even better they offer gluten-free pizza and pasta bases and all their sauces besides the meatball sauce are gluten-free. If you’re vegan they have vegan pizza options as well.

Headlands Hotel

All your fave pub classics with plenty of gluten-free options. The little nippers [kids] menu also has a couple of gluten-free choices including a cheeseburger and chips so any little ones who are coeliac won’t feel like they’re missing out.

Saltie Dog Coffee & Crepes

All the crepes here can be made gluten-free and with locations in Coledale, Corrimal and Wollongong there are plenty of opportunities to get a crepe fix. The savoury options include goodies like chicken mornay and ham and cheese and don’t even get us started on the sweet selection. Nutella and banana? Um, yes, please!

Rehal Divine Indian Restaurant

The vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus here are jam-packed with yummy dishes and are pretty much mostly gluten-free. We’ll start with the veggie pakoras please followed by the authentic paneer butter masala… drool!

The Garden

Almost everything on the menu at this cafe in Berry has the option to be made gluten-free. This is a proper local joint with most of the produce coming from local suppliers like eggs from Kangaroo Valley and choccy from just down the road at Berry Chocolatier. The menu changes seasonally meaning there’s always something fun to try.

Hopefully, this list comes in handy for some of our Illawarra friends with coeliac disease. If you have any other recommendations for coeliac-friendly restaurants around the Illawarra that you think should make the list, don’t hesitate to give us a shout. The more the merrier!
