6 Things To Do On A Monday Night In The Illawarra

Cos’ Monday Is The New Friday

Monday nights really get a bad rap.

Often considered the most boring night of the week, here at The Fold we disagree and are determined to show you why!

Let’s make the most of these longer evenings before.

Check out our list of awesome things you can do to cure that dreaded Mondayitis and have you wishing EVERY night was a Monday.

1 :: Monday Night Specials

Monday night is THE best for scooping up food and drink deals all around town.

First off, the barbecue bosses at 2 Smoking Barrels are rockin’ Meat Tray Mondays to get the week started! Not only is there a classic Meat raffle with excellent prizes up for grabs. You can also score a decent hospo meal deal for only 20 smackeroos.

Monday night is Burrito Night at the Grand Hotel in Kiama. Get your mouth around a hearty burrito for only $15 and wash it down with one of their $12 cocktails for that perfect sweet and spice combo.

The Shellharbour Club is also keeping it classic with a $15 rump steak. And keeping with the classic theme Corrimal Hotel has $15 schnitties up for grabs. Or Warilla Bowls serves up a $12 steak spesh every Monday night from 5pm onwards.

We get it though, sometimes you’re feeling like pulling out all the stops. Well, you’re in luck because Headlands Hotel in Austinmer has a Monday night spesh of  ½ rack BBQ pork ribs with chips & ranch slaw for $25. Sounds epic to us!

If you’re on the other side of the table and are really feeling the pinch from the weekend but still want to go out, then the UOW UniBar has your back with $10 schnitzel, chips and salad and if you get in before 5:30 you can even nab happy hour drinks to boot.

Or if you’ve got burgers on the brain then head to Five Islands Hotel for their $10 burger night. Nom, nom, nom!

We love a dinner deal at 2 Smoking Barrels

2 :: Classic Movie Night

Spend a night in front of the screen. No, not at home on the couch with Netflix [boooring] but instead at the Illawarra’s only remaining independent and locally owned cinema, The Gala in Warrawong.

This cinema has been going since 1948 and is a real piece of Illawarra’s history. On Mondays [as well as Sundays and Tuesdays] tickets will only set you back $10. The concession bar usually has pretty good deals too so be prepared to get snacky. They show some of the most recent blockbusters but also lots of cool international, local and art house films. Perfect for impressing your date or pal with your top-notch cinematic taste.

3 :: Game On

Get amongst the bright lights and loud noises of TimeZone Shellharbour. Open until 9 pm every night of the week this joint is chock-a-block with over 70 fun and challenging arcade games. Tap your feet to Dance Dance Revolution, kick butt at air hockey or shoot your friends in the Nerf Arcade. Let your inner kid run wild on the lolly-picker games and maybe let out some of that Monday work frustration on the Dodgem cars.

If you’d prefer to let loose by smashing some pins, Northern Bowl in Bellambi is open until 8 pm and just oozes retro bowling alley charm. Think neon lights, hot dogs, milkshakes and even some old-school arcade games.

Take the bowling outside at Wiseman’s Park Bowling Club. Glow Bowls sessions can be booked for you and your mates, and for bowling groups of 5 or more, you can even add a catering package to the mix. We love the idea of bowling after dark!

4:: Get Moving

Maybe you’ve indulged a little too much over the weekend [hello Saturday night wines] and you’re ready to set up some healthy habits. Monday night is a perfect time to begin, with so many fun exercise classes on offer.

Starting off slow, Imperium Group Fitness in Helensburgh has Yoga classes every Monday night to get you niiiiice and relaxed. Further down the coast, The Pantha Way in Port Kembla has your evening serenity covered.

Kicking it up a notch, The Pilates Workshop in Shellharbour offers intro classes on Monday nights to get those muscles moving. Or if you’re on the lookout for some adrenaline power, Dynomite Indoor Climbing Gym is open until 9pm on Mondays for a spot of bouldering.

It’s time to dance the Monday blues away and Miss Zoe’s School of dance has loads of fun adult classes in their Wollongong and Kiama studios that will surely do the trick. Fancy some partner dancing? Dancespace 383 in Wollongong runs ballroom classes for beginners and up… they encourage both couples and singles, win-win!

5 :: Let’s get quizzical

If you want a brain workout instead, then Monday night Trivia is where it’s at. The Illawarra Yacht Club hosts trivia every Monday at 6:30 pm, entry is free and there are great prizes to be won.

For those of us who prefer to lay off the old noggin for the night, then Bingo it is! Oak Flats Bowling Club is where you go every fourth Monday to see those rolling balls. And trust us this is not your granny’s classic bingo [not that there’s anything wrong with that]). This is Drag Queen Bingo! Hosted by the hilarious Prada Clutch, she’ll have you ROFL-ing all night. Bonus: The jackpot is a whopping $1000 so get those bingo dabbers at the ready!

6 :: Get Crafty

The back-to-work Monday grind can be tough, sheesh! So it’s time to shake it off and get those creative juices flowing in an arts or crafts class. Soul Clay Studios offer courses on wheel throwing and hand building for anyone who is keen to get their hands dirty.

But if you’d prefer your hands’ clay free, then why not try them at ‘Life Drawing’ instead? At 130 Art Studios, classes run on Monday evenings and bookings can be made online or over the phone.

WEA Illawarra also hosts a ton of different arts and crafts classes from learning to knit, macrame and even silver jewellery making. There are classes on most nights of the week including Monday night. Just keep an eye on their schedule and if you spot something you like remember to enrol ASAP as spots fill up fast.

Get creative at Soul Clay Studios
