Previously a teacher, it became time to not just read and share picture books, but write them too. For Karen it’s always about stories, books and children reading. She lives by the sea in Shellharbour, Australia, where she snorkels with stingrays, watches whales and becomes a story spy in local coffee shops. Karen believes the best thing about being a children’s author is that you can be a child again. Always curious, she travels whenever she can. She dreams of swimming with whale sharks one day and hopes to visit the real castle in Germany that inspired Cinderella’s castle.
Local author, Karen Hendriks, has just released her brand new children’s book, Our Shellharbour, and when you see it, you’ll understand why we’re so excited about it. Inspired by her childhood, bringing up her own children, and teaching the next generation of children in the Shellharbour region, Karen has put the magic of Shellharbour onto the pages in her newest [and first self-published!] book.
Our Shellharbour follows Lani and Oli as they explore Shellharbour’s natural world, discovering birds and creatures along the way, they make their way around Cascade Falls, Oak Flats, Windang Bridge, Blackbutt Forest, Lake Illawarra, Little Lake, Little Park, The Farm [which has just been named NSW’s second best beach!], the marina, plenty of local beaches, and many more of the places around Shellharbour that we know and love.
Our Shellharbour allows children growing up in the area to feel connected to the area they live in, and can imagine themselves as characters in the book visiting places they may have been before. This book endeavours to create a strong connection to place and community for the children who read it.
The last few pages of Our Shellharbour are dedicated to detailing some history about the locations Lani and Oli visit on their journey.
Signing up to this list may just be the best decision you’ve ever made.
We’ll send you an email each week with what’s on around Illawarra. New local businesses to support. Things to do. Places to see. All the good stuff to get you out and about, livin’ the good life.
