THE STARFISH STORE // Where Education and Fun Collide in the Illawarra

We’re shining a spotlight on a gem of a store that’s been a cornerstone in our community for over 8 years. Meet The Starfish Store, a place where education, fun, and community come together in the most delightful way. We had a chat with the store’s owner, Kirstie Wishart, and let’s just say, her passion for what she does is absolutely contagious!

The Dream Shop Come to Life

Kirstie’s journey began over 30 years ago when she walked into an educational store in Tasmania. “It was love at first sight,” she recalls. “I could have spent hours there.” Fast forward to today, and she’s turned that dream into a reality right here in the Illawarra.

More Than Just a Store

What sets The Starfish Store apart? “It’s so much fun,” Kirstie beams. “I love sourcing fabulous products that are not just eye-catching but also serve a purpose—whether it’s educational, developmental, or social.” But it doesn’t stop there. Kirstie and her team also design their own branded products that fill specific needs.

A Buzz Like No Other

The Starfish Store isn’t just a retail space; it’s also a specialist tutoring centre. “Working one-to-one with children and young people is such a buzz,” Kirstie shares. One memorable story that stands out? A young man with Down Syndrome who came in to learn how to read so he could text his girlfriend.

“The excitement when he sent his first SMS was an absolute high,” she says. “Stories like these make all the hours and commitment worthwhile.”

Why You Should Drop By

Located right behind the Greater Union Cinemas, The Starfish Store is a treasure trove of quality gifts, toys, and educational resources. “We have extensive experience and expertise,” Kirstie points out.

“We can help you find the perfect item that has education, skills, development, and social relationships in mind!” Plus, the store is accessible and champions inclusivity in employment.

A Day in Someone Else's Shoes

If Kirstie could switch roles for a day, she’d choose to be a product designer in the field of education or special needs. “Imagine the possibilities,” she muses.

Living the Illawarra Dream

When she’s not running the store, Kirstie loves the Illawarra lifestyle. “The weather, the outdoor activities—it’s all amazing,” she says. Her go-to weekend activity? eMountain Biking. And if you’re wondering where she grabs her coffee, it’s Leaf Cafe in Shell Cove.

So, next time you’re looking for a unique gift or perhaps some educational fun for the kiddos, make sure to swing by The Starfish Store
