How to Attract and Retain Skilled Team Members in Your Business.

The competition for excellent working talent is hotter than ever. Here’s how to get yourself incredible team members and how to actually keep them.

It seems to be the topic on everyone’s lips atm. The struggle of finding and holding onto good staff can feel like a major hurdle, and high turnover is a headache for many of us.

All this worry has left us wondering, are there some hacks or tips for not only drawing talent to our biz but also ensuring they stick around for the long haul? Lucky for us, we scored some fantastic insights from the local recruitment pros over at Illawarra Recruitment and we just knew we had to share it with you guys.

Let’s dive in to get the lowdown.

1:: Keep those communication channels open

To keep your team happy and sticking around like glue, you’ve gotta keep those communication channels wide open and have regular catch-up meetings. Book a regular slot in your calendar for these and stick to it! Constant rescheduling of these meetings with your staff can signal to them that they may not be as important to the biz as you think they are and can leave them feeling disheartened.

Don’t be shy to ask your staff how they’re feeling – about work, life, you name it. Chat, listen and take on the feedback they might give you. It’s not only an excellent way to keep the team going but also you might learn some tips and tricks on ways to improve your working style and business.

2:: Make sure any new staff are trained correctly with space for follow-up

When it comes to welcoming new crew members aboard, make sure you’ve got that training ready to roll and make time for it to happen. Staff need to know the correct way to do things or they might become frustrated or make unnecessary mistakes. Once the training is done, make sure to follow up with them. Follow-up meetings will stop any newbies feeling like a fish out of water and will keep your crew mates in tip-top shape.

3:: Offer flexibility

We know that this one might not be for everyone but if it makes sense for your biz then why not dive into the world of flexible working arrangements? If you love that office environment feeling then go for it but why not be open to a hybrid arrangement so that staff can work from home as needed? We know many workers appreciate the consideration that comes with this type of arrangement and it’s like a choose-your-own-adventure for the modern workplace.

4:: Regular annual salary reviews

This one is all about keeping things fair. As an employer, we think it’s really important to have regular annual salary reviews so your hard workers get a real high-five for the effort they put into your business. Sit down, crunch the numbers and give your employees the recognition they deserve before they go somewhere else looking for it.

5:: Offer outside training opportunities

Training is all about growth, and team members who feel like they can grow at work are more likely to stay there. Look for ways to provide extra training for your staff, even if that means sometimes paying for it. Trust us the cost of training will more than likely outweigh the cost of rehiring. And who wouldn’t love more highly skilled knowledgeable staff, right?

6:: Better staff retention means better future staff

Staff retention is a major draw when candidates are sizing up potential employers. If they are keen on working for your biz, they will often do research into things like working conditions and staff retention to help them decide whether it’s in their best interest to apply. If you’ve got a fab reputation for staff retention then you’re waaaay more likely to attract even more excellent candidates. Remember when you’re researching your future employees, they’re doing just the same for you.

So hopefully that’s given you some ideas for securing and holding onto your dream team at work. We’re super grateful to our pals at Illawarra Recruitment for giving us the rundown.
